Year-End Tax Reporting Documents

The IRS requires Columbia University to issue year-end tax reporting forms for specific types of payments. The table below provides information and links to specific sites for more information on each of these forms.

Year End Tax Reporting Documents

FORM: 1042-S
USE: Form 1042-S is issued to international students who have received a fellowship/scholarship/grant in excess of tuition charges and/or received compensation/wages/earnings exempt from income tax withholding (federal and state) due to a treaty article between the U.S. and the individual country of tax residence. ISSUE DATE: March 15

FORM: 1099-MISC
USE: Form 1099M is issued for non-wage income and other payments based on IRS rules and regulations. Payments can be for prizes, awards, royalties and non-employee compensation. Click here for more information or if you need assistance.

FORM: 1099-R
USE: Form 1099R is issued to retirees receiving a pension payment or disability pension directly from Columbia University. Click here for more information or if you need assistance.

FORM: W-2
USE: Form W-2 reports employee salaries and wages, as well as other required information. Typically individuals must attach W-2’s to their individual tax return when it is filed. Foreign nationals may also receive a W-2 for salaries and wages if they have taxable salary and wages. Click here for more information or if you need assistance.

1098-T

Please visit the 1098-T page for information on its use for payment of tuition and fees along with associated aid. The 1098-T is a record of the financial information reported by Columbia to the IRS on a student’s behalf. The information on the form can be used to help you determine if you are eligible for education tax credits when filing a U.S. Tax return.
