IMC CEO Statement on FY25 Endowment Returns

October 23, 2025

The total value of Columbia’s endowment as of June 30, 2025 was $15.9 billion, reflecting a return of 12.4% on the assets managed by Columbia University Investment Management Company, as well as gifts and transfers, and spending from the endowment in fiscal 2025. The University’s trailing five and ten-year returns are 9.9% and 7.8%, respectively.

“Columbia’s performance in fiscal year 2025 reflects the positive performance of global equity markets, and a portfolio of talented public markets managers who have skillfully invested in these strong markets and created alpha to enhance returns,” stated Columbia IMC President and CEO Kim Lew. “Columbia’s private investments saw a significant improvement versus the last few years, although performance still lags public market performance.  Our strong belief in the culture of innovation in the US, coupled with the company-building expertise resident in many private equity firms, strengthens our commitment to investing in private markets, while maintaining a high bar for investing.  Our team remains deeply committed to building a portfolio that supports Columbia’s core mission.”

Columbia’s endowment is a critical form of support for University academic programs, faculty research, and student financial aid. Due in large part to the generosity of donors and endowment support, Columbia was able to provide financial aid to more than 50% of undergraduates in fiscal 2025.
