IMC CEO Statement on FY26 Endowment Returns

November 3, 2026

The total value of Columbia’s endowment as of June 30, 2026 was $17.9 billion, reflecting a return of 18.3% on the assets managed by Columbia University Investment Management Company, as well as gifts and transfers, and spending from the endowment in fiscal 2026. The University’s trailing five and ten-year returns are 7.5% and 9.9%, respectively.

“Fiscal year 2026 was the fourth consecutive year of double digit returns in global equity markets, and our investments in global equities performed in line with this year’s strong returns. Notably, a strong driver of performance for the University in fiscal 2026 was our hedge fund portfolio, which substantially outperformed the benchmark. Columbia’s hedge fund managers had exceptional outperformance due to both sector, particularly AI related exposure, and geographic exposure” stated Columbia IMC President and CEO Kim Lew. “Columbia’s private portfolio, while adeveloping asset class for us, also saw strong solid performance and reflects growth in our venture portfolio, offset in part by a shrinking portfolio in natural resources. We continue to be enthusiastic about private investment opportunities, although increasingly selective as a result of  record high valuations. We are deeply committed to building a portfolio that supports Columbia’s core mission and its aspirations now and in the future.”

Columbia’s endowment is a critical form of support for University academic programs, faculty research, and student financial aid. Due in large part to the generosity of donors and endowment support, Columbia was able to provide financial aid to more than 50% of undergraduates in fiscal 2026.
