Building Evacuation Procedures

The Studebaker building has a fire life safety plan, and the building management is required to adhere to the direction of either the NYPD, FDNY, or any other emergency organization that is in control of specific situation at any given time during an emergency.

The Studebaker building conducts fire drills at least semi-annually, updates fire warden lists and tests the fire alarm system on a regular basis.

Please familiarise yourself with the location of the fire exits on your floor, the location of the fire alarm boxes, and which floors are re-entry floors.

Fire and Deputy Wardens need to sign in every morning in the log book located on the first floor with security to help facilitate the NYPD, FDNY, or any other emergency organization in the event of an emergency.

Fire
If you see fire or smoke, follow the four ACES of high rise building fire safety:

1. ACTIVATE the fire alarm immediately by pulling the nearest Fire Alarm Box on your floor (boxes are located next to stairwells B and C).  If you cannot pull the Fire Alarm, call 911.

2. COMMUNICATE with the Fire Warden Team and other colleagues on your floor.

3. EVACUATE by using the stairs (see diagram).  DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.  Members of the Fire Warden team will lead the evacuation down two or more floors for re-entry (or if there is the need to evacuate the building completely, to Columbia ’s meeting place is Con Edison just west of Studebaker on 132nd Street).

4. SELF-ESCAPE Stay calm, don’t panic.  Stay low in smoke conditions, and close doors to confine fire and smoke.  Feel doors before opening them; if they’re hot, don’t open!

If you hear the fire alarm, but there is no visible fire or smoke on your floor:

  • Gather in the area by the elevator bank.
  • Stand by for instructions from the Fire Warden, Building Fire Safety Director, or via the building PA system.
  • If there is a need to evacuate, your Fire Warden or Fire Safety Director will inform you.
