2007

Columbia continues to focus on its future growth in its areas of excellence: research, scholarship, education, and patient care.  The financial results of the fiscal year ended June 30, 2007 makes the achievement of our goals attainable.  The balance sheet continues to strengthen, fueled by a change in net assets from operations (“operating income”). The rate of growth in all areas of operating revenues was positive after an adjustment for a significant one time revenue event in fiscal year 2006.  There are still challenges ahead, but we are solidly placed to meet those challenges.  This continues to be an exciting time of financial growth at Columbia University.  We look forward to the future with increased financial strength and ongoing commitment to our mission and our global community. The continued growth in Columbia’s financial resources fuels its commitment to excellence in research, education, and patient care.  The fiscal year ended June 30, 2006 was another solid year for the University.  While the results were quite positive, there are still specific challenges being addressed within certain schools or departments.  This is an exciting time for Columbia as we grow to meet the increasing demands of our constituents and the global community.  The strength of our financial resources supports our strategic goals and we look forward to meeting those goals now and in the future.  Click Here for 2006 Report on Federal Awards in Accordance with OMB Circular A133.

Fiscal year 2005 produced very positive financial results for Columbia, enabling progress in many areas. Most operating units’ actual revenues performed ahead of budget, and the rate of growth of operating revenues well exceeded that of operating expenses.  The Balance Sheet reflected robust net asset growth, enhancing the University’s already strong financial position and improving many of the key financial ratios. The results of the year and the trends indicated will allow Columbia to more successfully address the important strategic opportunities that lie ahead.  Click Here for 2005 Report on Federal Awards in Accordance with OMB Circular A133

The University continued to sustain steady growth. The strong performance of our endowment has helped to support the University's long-term strategic goals. The University benefited from multiple sources of support, all of which continued to trend upward in fiscal 2004. Additionally, expense management strategies have led to a closer relationship between expense growth and revenue growth while continuing to improve business processes throughout the University.  Click Here for 2004 Report on Federal Awards in Accordance with OMB Circular A133.

University operations in the year ended June 30, 2003, continued to show a vigorous commitment to the current and future excellence of Columbia’s scholarly community and the campuses.  Strong flows of net tuition income and government grants for research, attracted by the promise of excellence, have kept the University’s academic activities in fiscal balance.  The University supplemented alumni gifts and external borrowing with the investment of operating reserves to address its long-term needs for space. Accommodating the expanding teaching and research activities of Columbia faculty has been and remains a central objective of financial management at the University.  Click Here for 2003 Report on Federal Awards in Accordance with OMB Circular A133.

Despite weaknesses in the economy and the financial markets during the past year, the University saw strong growth in instruction and research activities, its academic core, while maintaining a sound fiscal position.  Although market conditions, resulted in a slight decline in the endowment, the University was still able to maintain its planned pace for the renovation and construction of facilities while keeping the endowment spending rate below its target.  Although challenges undoubtedly lie ahead, the Columbia community gives the University reason to look ahead with confidence.
CU Financial Results Cover 2001 2001
The University’s financial results for the year ended June 30, 2001 continued the strong revenue growth that began in the mid-1990’s.  Although the investment performance of the University’s endowment was favorable relative to the equity markets, its modes absolute return  for the year is a reminder that the historically high average annual rates of return that many endowments, including Columbia’s, experienced over the past ten years are by no means guaranteed.  The University faces the financial challenges that may lie ahead, especially in the wake of the World Trade Center attack, from a position of strength that is maintained by prudent fiscal management, by the loyal support of the University’s alumni and friends, and most fundamentally, by the excellence of its faculty and students.

The University’s favorable operating results for the year ended June 30, 2000, extend the pattern established in the prior decade of vigorous revenue growth supported by academic excellence.  Those increased revenues have helped Columbia make critical investments in faculty and research as well as in the capital fabric of the University.  Particularly notable is the continuing rise in royalty and licensing income from patents, resulting in the highest in the nation for both private and public universities.
